“I’m afraid I must,” said Mabel Waring. “But,” she added in her weak, wobbly voice which only sounded ridiculous when she tried to strengthen it, “I have enjoyed myself enormously.”
Mrs. Cole-Mortimer, who had accompanied her in her stroll, purred the purr of the pleased patron whose protegee has been thankful for favours received.
By whom and for what are children to be trained?
"Good-night, Jack, my boy," said his uncle, after the ladies had retired. "I shan't come to the smoking-room to-night. Mind, breakfast at nine sharp. I have ordered a real flyer for you to-morrow, and I want you to keep up your reputation and show them the way, also to give an eye to Milly. I[Pg 305] can trust her with most horses, but Birdcatcher is, as you know, an awkward customer if he gets his temper up. Mr. Simpson," turning to his guest, "you will find everything in the smoking-room. Jack and Tom will show you where it is. I am rather tired, and will wish you good-night and good sport to-morrow."
Dot interrupted this conversation, by suddenly grasping Linda’s arm. “Look at Sprague!” she cried. “Look at the way he’s waving that hat of his to his girl-friend! Now what do you suppose the idea of that is?”
And now, reader, as thou canst be in no suspense far the fate of our great man, since we have returned him safe to the principal scene of his glory, we will a little look back on the fortunes of Mr. Heartfree, whom we left in no very pleasant situation; but of this we shall treat in the next book.
"There are at present 25 or 30 white persons connected with the various missionary and education societies, or attached to the colonies as physicians, &c. The government of Liberia is essentially republican. All the officers, except the Governor, (who is appointed by the Colonization Society) being chosen by the people. Elections are held annually in every village, and are conducted with great propriety and decorum. A vice-governor, legislative councillors, a high sheriff, constables, &c., are some of the officers elected annually. The militia is well organized and efficient. The officers and men exhibit a degree of enthusiasm in the performance of their duty seldom witnessed elsewhere; and on field days their neat and orderly appearance, their thorough discipline, and the promptness and precision of their evolutions, command the admiration of every observer.
1.Before I made my tour of inspection I was ushered into the presence of the supervisor—a sad, thin man in a flapping black coat who had the nervous cough of an undertaker. He explained that the season being Christmas he was very busy. Trade was brisk; everyone in Vienna had something to sell. This may strike you as quaint, but in Vienna nowadays Christmas is celebrated by pawning and not by purchasing. Because of this the supervisor asked to be excused from conducting me personally over his mausoleum. He entrusted me to a gray, unshaven man who had the appearance of a broken Count. He may have been a Count. An Admiral, who was the hope of the Adriatic navy, is banging at a typewriter today.
2."Yes," replied Virginia, moving a little impatiently, for she anticipated eagerly the picturesque coming of these men of the Silent Places, and wished to savor the pleasure undistracted.>
I could see many of the younger Counsellors start back in manifest horror, as the Sphere’s circular section widened before them. But on a sign from the presiding Circle — who shewed not the slightest alarm or surprise — six Isosceles of a low type from six different quarters rushed upon the Sphere. “We have him,” they cried; “No; yes; we have him still! he’s going! he’s gone!”
The action of the university, both in what is taught, and in the spirit of the place, is directed more on producing an English gentleman, than a saint or a psychologist. It ripens a bishop, and extrudes a philosopher. I do not know that there is more cabalism in the Anglican, than in other churches, but the Anglican clergy are identified with the aristocracy. They say, here, that, if you talk with a clergyman, you are sure to find him well-bred, informed, and candid. He entertains your thought or your project with sympathy and praise. But if a second clergyman come in, the sympathy is at an end: two together are inaccessible to your thought, and, whenever it comes to action, the clergyman invariably sides with his church.
So Diamond went home. That afternoon, his head began to ache very much and he had to go to bed. In the middle of the night, his aunt came in to feel his forehead and to give him a drink of lemonade. Then he went off to sleep, but was awake again soon, for a burst of wind blew open his lattice window. The same moment, he found himself in a cloud of North Wind’s hair, with her beautiful face, set in it like a moon, bending over him.
[kjv] But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; [bbe] Now a number of strange women were loved by Solomon, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites: 11:2 [hgb] 论 到 这 些 国 的 人 ， 耶 和 华 曾 晓 谕 以 色 列 人 说 ， 你 们 不 可 与 她 们 往 来 相 通 ， 因 为 她 们 必 诱 惑 你 们 的 心 去 随 从 她 们 的 神 。 [kjv] Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. [bbe] The nations of which the Lord had said to the children of Israel, You are not to take wives from them and they are not to take wives from you; or they will certainly make you go after their gods: to these Solomon was united in love. [kjv] And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. [bbe] He had seven hundred wives, daughters of kings, and three hundred other wives; and through his wives his heart was turned away. [kjv] For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father. [bbe] For it came about that when Solomon was old, his heart was turned away to other gods by his wives; and his heart was no longer true to the Lord his God as the heart of his father David had been. [kjv] For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. [bbe] For Solomon went after Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Zidonians, and Milcom, the disgusting god of the Ammonites. [kjv] And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as did David his father. [bbe] And Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord, not walking in the Lord's ways with all his heart as David his father did. [kjv] Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. [bbe] Then Solomon put up a high place for Chemosh, the disgusting god of Moab, in the mountain before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the disgusting god worshipped by the children of Ammon. [kjv] And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods. [bbe] And so he did for all his strange wives, who made offerings with burning of perfumes to their gods. [kjv] And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice, [bbe] And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had twice come to him in a vision; 11:10 [hgb] 耶 和 华 曾 吩 咐 他 不 可 随 从 别 神 ， 他 却 没 有 遵 守 耶 和 华 所 吩 咐 的 。 [kjv] And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which the LORD commanded. [bbe] And had given him orders about this very thing, that he was not to go after other gods; but he did not keep the orders of the Lord. [kjv] Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant. [bbe] So the Lord said to Solomon, Because you have done this, and have not kept my agreement and my laws, which I gave you, I will take the kingdom away from you by force and will give it to your servant. [kjv] Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy father's sake: but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son. [bbe] I will not do it in your life-time, because of your father David, but I will take it from your son. [kjv] Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen. [bbe] Still I will not take all the kingdom from him; but I will give one tribe to your son, because of my servant David, and because of Jerusalem, the town of my selection. [kjv] And the LORD stirred up an adversary unto Solomon, Hadad the Edomite: he was of the king's seed in Edom. [bbe] So the Lord sent Hadad the Edomite to make trouble for Solomon: he was of the king's seed in Edom. [kjv] For it came to pass, when David was in Edom, and Joab the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain, after he had smitten every male in Edom; [bbe] And when David had sent destruction on Edom, and Joab, the captain of the army, had gone to put the dead into the earth, and had put to death every male in Edom; 11:16 [hgb] 约 押 和 以 色 列 众 人 在 以 东 住 了 六 个 月 ， 直 到 将 以 东 的 男 丁 尽 都 剪 除 。 [kjv] (For six months did Joab remain there with all Israel, until he had cut off every male in Edom:) [bbe] (For Joab and all Israel were there six months till every male in Edom had been cut off;) 11:17 [hgb] 那 时 哈 达 还 是 幼 童 。 [kjv] That Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father's servants with him, to go into Egypt; Hadad being yet a little child. [bbe] Hadad, being still a young boy, went in flight to Egypt, with certain Edomites, servants of his father; 11:18 [hgb] 他 们 从 米 甸 起 行 ， 到 了 巴 兰 。 [kjv] And they arose out of Midian, and came to Paran: and they took men with them out of Paran, and they came to Egypt, unto Pharaoh king of Egypt; which gave him an house, and appointed him victuals, and gave him land. [bbe] And they went on from Midian and came to Paran; and, taking men from Paran with them, they came to Egypt, to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who gave him a house and gave orders for his food and gave him land. [kjv] And Hadad found great favour in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him to wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen. [bbe] Now Hadad was very pleasing to Pharaoh, so that he gave him the sister of his wife, Tahpenes the queen, for his wife. [kjv] And the sister of Tahpenes bare him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh's house: and Genubath was in Pharaoh's household among the sons of Pharaoh. [bbe] And the sister of Tahpenes had a son by him, Genubath, whom Tahpenes took care of in Pharaoh's house; and Genubath was living in Pharaoh's house among Pharaoh's sons. [kjv] And when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers, and that Joab the captain of the host was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, Let me depart, that I may go to mine own country. [bbe] Now when Hadad had news in Egypt that David had been put to rest with his fathers, and that Joab, the captain of the army, was dead, he said to Pharaoh, Send me back to my country. [kjv] Then Pharaoh said unto him, But what hast thou lacked with me, that, behold, thou seekest to go to thine own country? And he answered, Nothing: howbeit let me go in any wise. [bbe] But Pharaoh said to him, What have you been short of while you have been with me, that you are desiring to go back to your country? And he said, Nothing; but even so, send me back. [kjv] And God stirred him up another adversary, Rezon the son of Eliadah, which fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah: [bbe] And God sent another trouble-maker, Rezon, the son of Eliada, who had gone in flight from his lord, Hadadezer, king of Zobah: 11:24 [hgb] 大 卫 击 杀 琐 巴 人 的 时 候 ， 利 逊 招 聚 了 一 群 人 ， 自 己 作 他 们 的 头 目 ， 往 大 马 色 居 住 ， 在 那 里 作 王 。 [kjv] And he gathered men unto him, and became captain over a band, when David slew them of Zobah: and they went to Damascus, and dwelt therein, and reigned in Damascus. [bbe] He got some men together and made himself captain of a band of outlaws; and went to Damascus and became king there. [kjv] And he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, beside the mischief that Hadad did: and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria. [bbe] He was a trouble to Israel all through the days of Solomon. And this is the damage Hadad did: he was cruel to Israel while he was ruler over Edom. [kjv] And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon's servant, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king. [bbe] And there was Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite from Zeredah, a servant of Solomon, whose mother was Zeruah, a widow; and his hand was lifted up against the king. [kjv] And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father. [bbe] The way in which his hand came to be lifted up against the king was this: Solomon was building the Millo and making good the damaged parts of the town of his father David; 11:28 [hgb] 耶 罗 波 安 是 大 有 才 能 的 人 。 [kjv] And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph. [bbe] And Jeroboam was an able and responsible man; and Solomon saw that he was a good worker and made him overseer of all the work given to the sons of Joseph. [kjv] And it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field: [bbe] Now at that time, when Jeroboam was going out of Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite came across him on the road; now Ahijah had put on a new robe; and the two of them were by themselves in the open country. 11:30 [hgb] 亚 希 雅 将 自 己 穿 的 那 件 新 衣 撕 成 十 二 片 ， [kjv] And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces: [bbe] And Ahijah took his new robe in his hands, parting it violently into twelve. [kjv] And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee: [bbe] And he said to Jeroboam, Take ten of the parts, for this is what the Lord has said: See, I will take the kingdom away from Solomon by force, and will give ten tribes to you; 11:32 [hgb] （ 我 因 仆 人 大 卫 和 我 在 以 色 列 众 支 派 中 所 选 择 的 耶 路 撒 冷 城 的 缘 故 ， 仍 给 所 罗 门 留 一 个 支 派 。 ） [kjv] (But he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:) [bbe] (But one tribe will be his, because of my servant David, and because of Jerusalem, the town which, out of all the tribes of Israel, I have made mine,) 11:33 [hgb] 因 为 他 离 弃 我 ， 敬 拜 西 顿 人 的 女 神 亚 斯 他 录 ， 摩 押 的 神 基 抹 ， 和 亚 扪 人 的 神 米 勒 公 ， 没 有 遵 从 我 的 道 ， 行 我 眼 中 看 为 正 的 事 ， 守 我 的 律 例 典 章 ， 像 他 父 亲 大 卫 一 样 。 [kjv] Because that they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father. [bbe] Because they are turned away from me to the worship of Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Zidonians, and Chemosh, the god of Moab, and Milcom, the god of the Ammonites; they have not been walking in my ways or doing what is right in my eyes or keeping my laws and my decisions as his father David did. [kjv] Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant's sake, whom I chose, because he kept my commandments and my statutes: [bbe] But I will not take the kingdom from him; I will let him be king all the days of his life, because of David my servant, in whom I took delight because he kept my orders and my laws. 11:35 [hgb] 我 必 从 他 儿 子 的 手 里 将 国 夺 回 ， 以 十 个 支 派 赐 给 你 ， [kjv] But I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it unto thee, even ten tribes. [bbe] But I will take the kingdom from his son, and give it to you. [kjv] And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there. [bbe] And one tribe I will give to his son, so that David my servant may have a light for ever burning before me in Jerusalem, the town which I have made mine to put my name there. [kjv] And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel. [bbe] And you I will take, and you will be king over Israel, ruling over whatever is the desire of your soul. [kjv] And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that is right in my sight, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee. [bbe] And if you give attention to the orders I give you, walking in my ways and doing what is right in my eyes and keeping my laws and my orders as David my servant did; then I will be with you, building up for you a safe house, as I did for David, and I will give Israel to you. [kjv] And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever. [bbe] (So that I may send trouble for this on the seed of David, but not for ever.) 11:40 [hgb] 所 罗 门 因 此 想 要 杀 耶 罗 波 安 。 [kjv] Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. And Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, unto Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon. [bbe] And Solomon was looking for a chance to put Jeroboam to death; but he went in flight to Egypt, to Shishak, king of Egypt, and was in Egypt till the death of Solomon. [kjv] And the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon? [bbe] Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all he did, and his wisdom, are they not recorded in the book of the acts of Solomon? [kjv] And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. [bbe] And the time Solomon was king in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. [kjv] And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead. [bbe] And Solomon went to rest with his fathers, and was put into the earth in the town of David his father: and Solomon went to rest with his fathers and Rehoboam his son became king in his place.
